The Mercer Generating Station is a coal and gas-fired power plant on Ducks Island, Hamilton Township, New Jersey. It was completed in 1967, produces 751 MW of power, and is owned by PSEG Fossil. Over the last several years, $600 million worth of pollution-control equipment has been installed, PSE&G is making the Mercer Generating Station a model for energy companies worldwide of how coal can be burned with relative cleanliness. The new equipment sends emissions from the plant’s twin coal burners through environmental controls that include a 14-story dry scrubber, a baghouse containing 10,000 fabric filters, a carbon-injection system and a catalytic reduction unit. PSE&G has managed to reduce emissions of sulfur dioxide, mercury, nitrous oxides, and soot by over 90 percent.
Mark Schwartzkopf is the Senior Environmental Engineer for PSE&G Mercer Generating Station. Mark has 43 years with PSE&G and a background in plant operations, instrumentation and controls and over 20 years of environmental experience.
